10 Things You Didn’t Know about Drag-On
Best known for being one of the original members of the Ruff Ryders, Drag-On has been in the music industry for more than 20 years. His first single, “Down Bottom” was released in 1999. Drag-On may not have had the most commercially successful career, but he has earned a lot of respect within the hip-hop community. He has gotten the chance to work with some of the most famous artists and producers in the genre and he has always shown that he can keep up with anyone he gets on a song with. 1. He Is A Bronx Native
Drag-On was born Mell Smalls in the Bronx. Unfortunately, however, he didn’t have the best upbringing. Both of his parents were addicted to drugs and his mother eventually lost custody of him. Drag-On was primarily raised by his grandmother. He does not have any siblings.
2. He Is A Proud Father
Drag-On didn’t have a close relationship with his father, and that’s a cycle he’s always been determined not to repeat. He is a very proud father and from what we can tell he only has one child. It doesn’t appear that he and his child’s mother are in a relationship.
3. He Likes To Stay Active
There are lots of people who are perfectly content with sitting in the house all day, but Drag-On simply isn’t one of them. Drag-On likes to get out and about and he’s all about keeping himself in good shape. Not only is staying active good for his body, but it’s also good for his mind.
4. He Used To Be Homeless
During his lifetime, Drag-On has had to deal with a lot of challenging situations. When Drag-On was a teenager, his mother got sober and was able to regain custody of him. However, after a couple of years of living with her, she started using drugs again. This eventually led to Drag-On being homeless by the time he was 15 years old.
5. He’s A Pretty Private Person
If you’re looking for the kind of rapper who likes to put their personal life on display, that isn’t Drag-On. Even after all the time he’s spent in the industry, Drag-On has never been the kind of person who likes to be in the spotlight all the time. Instead, he likes to focus on his work as an artist and leave the other parts of the industry alone.
6. He Was Good Friends With DMX
Drag-On was only about 17-years-old when he met DMX. The two battled each other for about an hour and even though Drag-On lost, he ultimately earned DMX’s respect. The two would go on to be good friends for the rest of X’s life. In an interview with Vlad TV, Drag-On referred to X as his protector. He took DMX’s death especially hard and it’s clear that he really misses his friend.
7. He Has A Stutter
Drag-On has suffered from a stutter for most of his life. Most people would’ve let this stop them from having a career as a performer, but Drag-On isn’t the type to let anything stand in his way. When it comes to rapping, he’s always able to deliver his lyrics smoothly. Over the years, he’s also been able to gain better control of his stutter while speaking.
8. He Is An Actor
When most people think about Drag-On, his work as a rapper is the first thing that comes to mind. However, those who were around in the early 2000s will also remember that Drag-On is an actor. He made his debut appearance in the 2001 film Exit Wounds which starred DMX. Drag-On will also appear in an upcoming film called When The Tables Turn.
9. He Started His Own Record Label
After releasing two albums with major labels, Drag-On eventually decided that working with these big companies just wasn’t for him. He knew that he would be better off doing his own thing, and that’s exactly what he did. He founded a record company called Hood Environment Records. His third album, Hood Environment, was released under the label in 2007.
10. He Is All About Positivity
All of the things Drag-On has endured over the years would be enough to make some people adopt a negative outlook on life. Drag-On hasn’t let that happen to him, though. He tries to see the good in every situation despite the fact that things don’t always work out the way he wants.
