DJ Drama has been a fixture in the hip-hop community for more than 20 years. Best known for his Gangsta Grillz mixtapes, Drama has worked with some of the biggest names in the music industry. He has even worked on some R&B projects throughout his career. While some may not fully understand what his role is, DJ Drama’s keen ear and skills on the turntable have made him one of the most highly respected DJs in the industry. Even though he has already accomplished so much, he has no intentions of taking his foot off the gas any time soon. It was recently announced that he will be working with Fat Joe on another Gangsta Grillz project and fans couldn’t be more excited. Keep reading to learn 10 things you didn’t know about DJ Drama.

1. He’s From Philly

There are a lot of people out there who assume that DJ Drama is from New York City, but he was actually born and raised in Philadelphia and he has nothing but love for his city. Growing up in Philly not only played a big role on who he is as a person, but it also influenced his taste in music.

2. He Started DJing at 13

When most people think of DJ Drama the first thing that comes to mind are the project he’s done with artists. However, DJ Drama is also a legitimate DJ who knows how to to do his thing on the turntables. He started DJing when he was just 13 years old and at the time he didn’t realize that his voice would eventually be what made him famous.

3. He’s Won Several Awards

Artists aren’t the only people in the music industry who are capable of winning awards. DJ Drama has also gotten accolades for his talents. So far, he has won a total of five awards with the most recent being a Globa Spin Award in 2018. With the way he works, there’s a good chance he’ll be taking home even more awards in the future.

4. He Went To An HBCU

Historically Black Colleges and Universities have played a major role in the Black American community for centuries. After graduating from high school, DJ Drama decided to head down south where he attended Clark Atlanta University and studied mass communication. While there, he was able to connect with other DJs.

5. He Wanted To Get Into Filmmaking

Even though he started DJing at an early age, DJ Drama didn’t always plan on having a career as a DJ. Instead, he was focused on a different area of the entertainment industry. During an interview with GQ, DJ Drama said, “I was trying to get into filmmaking a little bit. As soon as I graduated college, I went to L.A. to work on Baby Boy [John Singleton’s 2001 hood classic starring Tyrese Gibson] as a production assistant. It felt like I was starting from the bottom of the industry, and it was a hell of an experience…”

6. He Never Lets The Haters Get To Him

No matter what you do in life, you have to accept the fact that not everything is going to like you or appreciate what you have to offer. This is something that DJ Drama came to terms with very early on in his career. He has developed a very thick skin and he doesn’t let the negative comments bother him.

7. He Was Married To Summer Walker…But Not The One You Think

DJ Drama was married to a woman named Summer P. Walker (not to be confused with the R&B singer Summer Walker) although it’s not clear how long the two were together. As far as we now, they did not have any children. A few years ago, rumors began to circulate that Summer P. Walker and Drake had had an affair at some point.

8. He Started A Record Label

DJ Drama isn’t just passionate about working with popular artists. He also wants to use his platform as a way to help up and coming artists reach their full potential. He is the founder of a record label called Generation Now. At the moment, the label’s biggest artists are Jack Harlow and Lil Uzi Vert.

9. He Likes To Travel

When he first started DJing, DJ Drama probably had no idea how far it would take him. Thanks to the success he’s had in his career, DJ Drama has gotten the chance to travel all over the world. He loves getting the opportunity to experience new places and he especially loves being able to relax on the beach.

10. He Loves Fashion

DJ Drama might not be a part of the high fashion world, but that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have a great sense of style. He has a knack for putting outfits together and he loves being able to express himself through his clothing. Whether he’s getting ready for an event or hanging with friends, he’s always going to look his best.
