Weezer is Releasing Four “Seasons” Albums in 2022
Weezer is an alt-rock band founded in Los Angeles, California, in 1992 by Rivers Cuomo, Patrick Wilson, Matt Sharp, and Jason Couper. The group signed with Geffen Records in 1993. Lead singer Rivers Cumo was a hesitant rockstar. After signing the deal, he became worried about what his life would look like and if this was what he really wanted. Nonetheless, from their first album release in 1994 to Weezer’s latest projects, the group has consistently explored genres and repeatedly reworked their style. Weezer has remained at the forefront of music for over twenty years and has sold over ten million records to date. Currently, they are working on a project scheduled for release in 2022.
Upcoming release
Weezer’s two 2021 album releases are nowhere near as ambitious as their 2022. Project. In January 2021, the group released OK Human, which explored the genre of Baroque Pop. Then, in May, they released Van Weezer, a hard rock album through and through. However, Rivers Cuomo is working on a larger project for 2022. Weezer is set to release a series of four albums, each channeling one of the seasons with a genre of music that evokes the feelings of the time of year. According to Billboard, Cuomo talked about the upcoming project. He said, “I guess I’ve had a lot of time on my hands, so I wrote four albums that we’ll put out next year.” It’s almost expected for a group like Weezer, who’s already released fifteen albums, to prolifically write songs during the pandemic while everyone else spent time binge-watching tv. There isn’t much information about the music presently, but there are some hints about how the albums will sound.
Seasons
Weezer’s SZNS spring album is set to be released on March 20, 2022. The songs on it will be acoustic and light with a mellow vibe. Some sources say it will be much like their album Island In The Sun, released on May 15, 2001. It was also referred to as the Green Album. The album was released after Weezer took a five-year break after mediocre reception to their 1996 album Pinkerton which featured many introspective songs written by lead singer Rivers Cuomo. So, he focused on more straightforward songs that he knew fans would enjoy on the Green Album. In fact, Cuomo recognized that each piece was written from a very dark time in the band’s history, so he deliberately wrote songs that were polar opposites for this album. Like the Summer Sonic Festival, Weezer singed ion to play in 2000, Islands in the Sun was a renewal album for the group. It will be an excellent basis for their season’s series.
The second album in Weezer’s SZNS series slated release dater is June 20, 2022. On this album, Weezer is returning to the sound that made them famous. When Weezer blasted onto the scene in 1994, their first hit was Buddy Holly. Somehow, they combined modern rock with an iconic mid-fifties worker, and it was gold. Additionally, According to Alternative Nation, the group was a fresh voice amongst the grunge-dominated charts. Songs like Undone (The Sweater Song) were instant hits featuring solid melodies and instantly memorized a chorus. Now, the group is set to reinvent the youthful fun that catapulted their career on this installment.
Dance Rock is a fusion genre with elements of pop-rock, post-punk, and some rhythm and blues influences. It had a large following early in the 80s, but it was drowned out by punk and disco. Yet, much like other innovations in their catalog, Weezer is bringing back the genre for the fall SZNS disc, set to release on September 22, 2022. It will be fantastic to hear what the group can do with music whose genre boasted names like New Order, Blondie, the Thomson Twins, and Spandau Ballet. Undoubtedly, it will be another instance of Weezer updating a classic genre and making it relevant and fresh. Winter is a season that many people don’t like because it’s cold and dreary. Perhaps that’s why many poets and songwriters use it as an analogy in songs for melancholy and feeling blue. The final album in Weezer’s SZNS series will be released on December 21, 2022, and will feature songs that evoke the classic phrase “the winter blues.”
Singer/songwriter Elliot Smith’s style, was the inspiration for many of these songs. Much of Smith’s catalog was bluesy and introspective, much the same as being indoors with too much to think in winter. Undoubtedly, Weezer will find a way to incorporate their own style, making winter a little bit more fun in 2022. For the four seasons, the group will also use musical themes from Vivaldi’s Le Quattro Stagioni, Italian for four seasons. Between 1718 and 1720, the Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi wrote a series of a musical based on each of the four seasons. He ended the series with eight more concerti, il cimento dell’armonia e dell’inventione; the contest between harmony and invention. Weezer has never needed a contest for their sound. After all, they’ve consistently gone outside the box and mixed together with many different genres in unique, updated ways. Adding Vivaldi influences to an already ambitious project will be another highly anticipated part of the project.
Final Words
Each SZSNS release will feature eight tracks. No doubt, the group will release a box set at the end of the year. It’s rumored that Weezer will work with a producer they never have before. The group is getting a lot of ink about their latest project for a good reason. Weezer has enjoyed a long career with many different incarnations. They’ve weathered the ups and downs of the music industry only to bounce back with something new for fans. To this day, they remain one of the most significant groups of the 90s.
