10 Things You Didn’t Know about YNW Melly

Have you ever heard the saying “life comes at you fast”? That’s exactly how life has been happening to rapper YNW Melly. When the young artist hit the scene in 2017, it didn’t take long for him to become one of the most talked-about up-and-coming artists in hip hop. His fan base was growing and it looked like he had a very promising career ahead of him. However, all of that changed at the beginning of 2019 when he was arrested and charged with two counts of murder. YNW Melly is currently incarcerated and awaiting his trial. Needless to say, his career has been put on hold and it there’s a big chance it may never recover. Keep reading to learn 10 things you didn’t know about YNW Melly.

1. He’s a Florida Native

YNW Melly was born and raised in the Gifford, Florida area. Although he will always have love for where he’s from, he recognizes that he didn’t come from an environment that left him with many options when it came to choosing his path in life. He has acknowledged that many of the people where he’s from never make it out.

2. He Doesn’t Know Who His Father Is

YNW Melly’s mother was just a 14-year-old high school freshman when she had him, and it appears that she wasn’t in a relationship with his father at the time. From what we know, YNW Melly has never met his father and doesn’t even know his identity. However, a rapper named Donte “Tha Gift” Taylor has claimed to be Melly’s father.

3. He’s In A Gang

Things in YNW Melly’s life haven’t always been easy. He comes from very humble beginnings and he’s had to make some difficult decisions in order to get by. One of those decisions included joining the Bloods when he was younger. He is a part of a long list of rappers who have been gang-affiliated over the years.

4. He’s A Chris Brown Fan

Just because YNW Melly is a rapper doesn’t mean that he doesn’t listen to other kinds of music. He’s always been a fan of R&B and he especially enjoys Chris Brown’s music. He even interpolated the lyrics from Chris Brown’s song “Say Goodbye” in his song “Slang That Iron”.

5. He Likes To Make Music That Touches People’s Souls

As an artist, YNW Melly really hopes to use his skills to connect with his listeners on a deep level. YNW Melly told Complex, “I need something that touches the soul. It ain’t about the views and all that; it’s about the soul. If that b***h touch anybody soul, you got them. It could be a billionaire listening, but if you made that song out of your soul, it’s gonna grip ears. It’s gonna be stuck. It hits your soul before it hits your ears.”

6. He Has Bipolar Disorder

Apparently, there’s more to the title of YNW Melly’s song “Mixed Personalities” than most people realize. In real life, he described himself as having mixed personalities and also revealed that he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. It’s unclear what kind of treatment he’s undergone over the years.

7. He Wants To Set An Example For His Younger Brother

From the outside, it may not seem like YNW Melly makes the wisest decisions. However, he believes that he’s going the best he can and he hopes to help pave the way for his younger brother. During an interview with Billboard in 2018, Melly said, “YNW B Slime, that’s my lil’ 11 year-old brother. He better than me… It make me proud though like, cause I remember I used to like, ‘You trying to rap?’ He was so young then I ain’t think he was listening and he was always watching me. Now me being the first person to ever make it out of Gifford, it like motivated him strong, cause I’m his big brother.”

8. He Likes To Joke Around

If you’ve ever listened to YNW Melly’s music, then you’ve probably gotten the impression that he is a somewhat serious person. However, that isn’t actually the case. YNW Melly enjoys having fun and he has a great sense of humor. Unfortunately, though, he’s been through a lot of things in life that are often reflected in his music.

9. He’s An Empath

When asked why he named his debut mixtape I Am You, Melly said that it’s because he genuinely feels like he can feel other people’s emotions. He told Billboard, YNW Melly said, “Like I am you. Literally, I am you. I feel everything you going through. I feel you when you laugh. When you think something funny, but you don’t think nobody understand why you think it’s funny. I am you. I understand, you know what I’m saying and I feel what you feel. I am literally you. The same person. I relate to you. God bless me with that.”

10. He Doesn’t Always Write Down His Lyrics

For lots of songwriters, their process actually involves writing their lyrics down. However, that isn’t always the case for YNW Melly. A lot of his songwriting is done in his head and oftentimes the lyrics never make it to a piece of paper (or a note in his phone).
