10 Awesome Songs about Drinking
Every country around the world and every culture has had drinking songs dating all the way back to 11th century Germany, when they were called Trinklieder. In Sweden, they’re called Dryckesvisor. And, right here, in the good old US of A, have you ever noticed that just about everybody you know has their very own favorite drinking song? Yes, all over the country, imbibers have bar song preferences, so we’ve put together a list of 10 awesome songs about drinking for you to check out.
1. “Friends In Low Places” by Garth Brooks
Garth’s 1990 hit album entitled “No Fences” made “Friends” become widely recognized as the “Number One Drinking Song for Drunken Sailors”. And, the fact is that more than 30 years later, the song is still a bar hopper’s favorite. It’s definitely the ultimate country tune among all of the well-known drinking songs and when combined with enough booze, is almost always guaranteed to spark a major sing-along. And, I guess by today’s standards, it might actually be called a “classic” but the most important thing about this Garth hit is that everybody can relate to the lyrics that include “when the beer chases our blues away”.
2. “I Love This Bar” by Toby Keith
This one may seem to be a bit more mellow than some other songs on this list, but it’s still a big hit because it has a “feel-good vibe”. It’s also a celebration of all of the good and bad things that can be found in bar culture (especially country bars). And, let’s face it, Toby will always be one of those legendary country music stars who is continuing to entertain fans worldwide who keep requesting and toasting his songs because they simply put a smile on everybody’s face. 3. “As Good as I Once Was” by Toby Keith
This is one of those brilliant play-on-words songs that’s become uber-popular in bars and was released back in May of 2005. It was featured on his 2005 album entitled “Honkytonk University” and is actually Toby’s own personal favorite. With so many amazing hit songs, it’s hard to fathom how he could ever pick a favorite. Right? But, we know that it’s definitely one of our favorites. Sputnik Music dubbed the song “a testament to how much old age sucks”.
4. “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” by Alan Jackson & Jimmy Buffett
Whether this catchy line became popular because of the hit song, or if it actually prompted the song, nobody really knows for sure. And, if you were to try to convince us that you’ve never ever uttered those famous words, we would never believe you. Released in 2003, since then, this song has had bar patrons saying “pour me something tall & strong…… like a Hurricane before I go insane”.
5. “Day Drinking” by Little Big Town
This is another of LBT’s many great drinking songs as well as a country music fans’ happy hour favorite. In addition, it’s the perfect sing-along song for when you get off work early. Who could possibly ever forget that exact moment in 1977 when they first listened to Jimmy Buffet’s “Margaritaville” on the radio. Another truly unforgettable drinking anthem is Pink’s “Raise Your Glass”. It’s the best sing-along song for folks in all stages of inebriation.
