10 Things You Didn’t Know about Crunchy Black
Have you ever heard of Darnell Carlton? Perhaps you’re shaking your head no, but you might know him by his stage name, Crunchy Black. Chances are, one of two things just happened. You either immediately recognized his name because you listen to his music or you are now laughing hysterically that anyone would choose something like Crunchy Black for a stage name. Either way, this rapper is making a name for himself in all kinds of ways. Here are 10 things about him that you may not know.
1. He’s also a hype man
If you’re like most people, you’re wondering what on Earth a hype man even is. As it turns out, it is an actual term used for an actual job position. Rappers often employ them to do what amounts to singing backup vocals, only while rapping. Their primary job is to get the crowd involved in make a lot of noise. This is how he got his start in the rap industry. He quickly realized that he wanted to be the person at the front of the stage, so he started working to make sure that he was the one getting noticed as opposed to being the one in the background.
2. He left the group he was in because he wanted a solo career
He was once a part of popular rap music group Three 6 Mafia, but he eventually left that group because he had a dispute over his solo career as well as claims that they weren’t paying him enough money. Apparently, he wanted a lot more money than he was getting for the job he was doing. When the rest of the group refused, he went public with it and said that he wanted to leave the group in order to focus on a solo career, something that he claims they did not support. Eventually, he did leave in order to create a solo album.
3. He has said that his solo album was released without permission from him
Despite the fact that he left the group because he wanted to be a solo artist, he claims that his record label producer released the album before he gave permission for him to do so. Apparently, he was extremely upset about this and let it be known that he simply wouldn’t tolerate such antics. It didn’t take long before he and that particular producer parted ways, as you might have guessed.
4. He’s all about the ‘gangsta’ lifestyle
He says that he likes the lifestyle that a lot of people who do his style of rap music live. Apparently, it’s not just the music, but an entire lifestyle that exists 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It might not be for everybody, but he says that it’s something he enjoys and always has. Furthermore, he says that he doesn’t plan on making any changes anytime soon.
5. He eventually went back to the same group he’d left
One of the more confusing things is the fact that he left Three 6 Mafia to work on a solar career, then turned around and went right back to the group. After he got upset that his solo album had apparently been released before he wanted it to be, he decided to abandon his solo career and ended up going back to the same group that he had left before. The thing is, that is a volatile group, so about half of the members that were there when he was the first time were gone, effectively making it a mixture of previous group members and new people that probably had no idea about any of the stuff going on with him.
6. He tends to instigate people
It’s probably pretty obvious by now that he sort of has a tendency to instigate others over just about everything. He has said many times that he doesn’t like anyone telling him what to do. In fact, he’s made it quite clear over the course of several years that he likes to be the one in charge and everyone else is supposed to do what he tells them to do. Apparently, he tends to get in people’s faces when things don’t go his way, becoming very vocal about the fact that he isn’t happy about something.
7. He’s no stranger to a jail cell
In a very short amount of time, he managed to get himself in a lot of trouble by beating his fiance, getting in trouble a second time for something similar, and then getting picked up on cocaine charges, all within the span of a few months. He was eventually arrested in Minnesota for all three charges and was subsequently sent to jail.
8. He knows how to work the legal system
The thing is, he definitely knows how to work the legal system in the United States. While charges like that would be enough to keep most people in jail for months, maybe even years, he was out and walking around free man within a matter of days. For him, it was literally like a slap on the wrist and nothing more.
9. He’s been laying low lately
It’s been a few years now since somebody came up to him when he was in Las Vegas and shot him twice, with one of those bullets hitting him in the face. At the time, he seemed to enjoy all of the attention that it was getting him, especially when he walked out of the hospital a few days later. However, he has been laying low quite a lot in more recent times, and no one is quite sure why. Perhaps it has something to do with getting shot or maybe it has more to do with his issues with the law. Whatever the reason might be, he doesn’t tend to make nearly as much noise these days as he used to.
10. He doesn’t know yet where he wants his career to take him next
He claims that he doesn’t really know where he wants his career to take him next, but he does say that he wants to do things that no one else is doing because he likes the idea of standing out. For now, his fans might just have to wait and see what happens.
